Imzu Tours, Khayelitsha: Hours, Address, Imzu Tours Reviews: 5/5
The initial cohort study was set up with support from the University of Cape Town to demonstrate the feasibility of ART in a high HIV-burden African setting, using a public health approach to ART provision, generic antiretrovirals and an adherence model predicated on patient education and empowerment. In that it is one of the longest-standing and largest treatment programmes in South Africa, and one in which there continues to be extensive innovation around models of service delivery, there is a great deal of interest in the continued tracking of clinical outcomes and the effectiveness of health service interventions.
Current research objectives pertain to: the clinical, epidemiological and operational aspects of expanded service delivery, including paediatric, adolescent and adult patient outcomes; long-term temporal trends in treatment durability; describing virological and immunological monitoring and resistance; and the incidence of HIV-associated conditions, including TB co-infection. Khayelitsha is an open cohort with continuous recruitment.

This paper is based on research on vigilantism in Khayelitsha, a black township, on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. Almost half of Khayelitsha’s households live below the food poverty line and there is a significant difference between income distribution within Khayelitsha vis-a-vis the Cape Town population. This paper argues that despite the fact that South Africa attained formal democracy in and has one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, the ‘nature and character of public participation’ is problematic, non-deliberative, and a reflection of blocked opportunities, poverty, and inequality Miller I argue that the discourse and rhetoric on ‘community’ is a shallow and dangerous form of incorporation that does not live up to its promises of full participation.
Not only is ‘community’ used as a tool to connect the state to the population but vigilantes also claim to act in the name of the ‘community. After a brief section on ‘Background and Methodology,’ I discuss the relationship between democracy and imprisonment, noting that South African democratization has witnessed a dramatic increase in long-term prison sentences. I argue that the government’s embracing of a restorative prison has enabled it to double back on its parsimonious, pre stance on imprisonment.
As a result, the prison and penal punitivism have become an important part of state building in newly democratic South Africa.

By Sisonke Mlamla Jul 7, Cape Town – The City of Cape Town has reiterated that no evictions have been conducted at the site of a land invasion in Khayelitsha, as incorrectly stated in some media reports. The City also said that land invasions occurring in Empolweni, Khayelitsha, are jeopardising a R million water pipeline for the informal settlement. The City explained that in terms of the Western Cape High Court order, the City of Cape Town is permitted to remove any new illegally erected structures on the land in question.
In line with the court order, five illegal structures were removed on 1 July The day prior, 30 June , one illegal structure was removed.
Antiretroviral therapy in primary health care: experience of the Khayelitsha programme in South Africa: case study / Médecins sans Frontières South Africa, the.
Globally, 37 million people are in need of lifelong antiretroviral treatment ART. With the continual increase in the number of people living with HIV starting ART and the need for life-long retention and adherence, increasing attention is being paid to differentiated service delivery DSD , such as adherence clubs. Adherence clubs are groups of 25—30 stable ART patients who meet five times per year at their clinic or a community location and are facilitated by a lay health-care worker who distributes pre-packed ART.
This qualitative study explores patient experiences of clubs in two sites in Cape Town, South Africa. A total of participants took part in 11 focus group discussions FGDs and 56 in-depth interviews in the informal settlements of Khayelitsha and Gugulethu in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants included current club members, stable patients who had never joined a club and club members referred back to clinician-led facility-based standard care. FGDs and interviews were conducted in isiXhosa, translated and transcribed into English, entered into NVivo, coded and thematically analysed.
The main themes were 1 understanding and knowledge of clubs; 2 understanding of and barriers to enrolment; 3 perceived benefits and 4 perceived disadvantages of the clubs. Moving between clubs and the clinic created frustration and broke down trust in the health-care system.

Informal trading is an everyday livelihood practice in South African cities. Although praised for its local economic development potential, in the post-Apartheid context, it often sits in tension with urban regeneration plans. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this research explores the material and symbolic spaces and everyday practices of street trading in the KCBD—specifically, how traders negotiate their trading practices in a context of on-going development.
Studies addressing the association between diabetes mellitus DM and tuberculosis TB in sub—Saharan Africa are limited. We assessed the prevalence of active TB among DM patients at a primary care clinic, and identified risk factors for prevalent TB. A cross—sectional study was conducted in adult DM patients attending a clinic in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
Among DM patients screened, the active TB prevalence was 3. Of the 13 prevalent TB cases, There were no significant differences in either fasting plasma glucose or HbA 1c levels between TB and non—TB participants. The prevalence of active TB among DM patients was 4—fold higher than the national prevalence; suggesting the need for active TB screening, particularly if hemoptysis is reported.
Our results highlight the importance of HIV screening in this older population group. Early detection of TB can lead to prompt treatment, increasing survival, and diminishing transmission risk.
