Love Like a Man (Single Version)

For as far back as Alvin Lee can remember, there was music in his home. His parents played and sang and had countless discs. There was always a guitar lying around our house. Before Alvin was sixteen, he was playing professionally with local groups. Then he formed a trio with his mate Leo Lyons on bass and a local drummer named Dave Quickmire. Dave had to leave for personal reasons, but said he had a friend who was a great drummer. The friends name was Ric Lee. When he came in, the basis was laid of what several years later was to become Ten Years After.

Graham was among the earliest U. This recording was made at Graham’s larger Winterland venue in , two years after the band had skyrocketed to fame with the Woodstock movie. The person who cut Ten Years After’s revolutionary split screen segment in the Woodstock movie, one might be interested to know, was a novitiate editor named Martin Scorcese. The show takes place near the end of the of the band’s golden years, when TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee’s blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues and jazz.

Shortly after recording this show, the band would leave Decca Records, the label who had signed them in , and move to Columbia’s corporate home. Frustrated with the popular music trend, Alvin Lee left the band, which disbanded soon after the second Columbia release in

It was getting dark by the time Ten Years After took the stage at Woodstock back in The audience — variously estimated at between , and , — was wet, chilled and bedraggled; many of them were the worse for wear after three days in the open. The band then kick into a breakneck boogie and the song takes off; Alvin spits out the vocals, filling in the spaces with more guitar salvos. The camera remains fixed on him; there are just occasional glimpses of keyboard player Chick Churchill, drummer Ric Lee no relation and bassist Leo Lyons, who is headbanging furiously.

Alvin leads the song high and low, never letting the pace flag, until nine minutes later he builds to a final warp-speed cacophony. When the Woodstock movie came out in late more than a year after the festival it did for Ten Years After what Live Aid did for Queen and U2 : transformed them into superstars. Suddenly TYA were the new heroes of British blues rock.

Ten Years After had been in the vanguard of the second heavier invasion of the US by British groups, touring relentlessly and rapidly reaching top-of-the-bill status. We used to wear the audiences out. Leo used to shake his head off. We used to have to gaffer-tape his headphones to his head. Riding the crest of this high-energy wave, Alvin would sneer and pout outrageously as he tore through solo after solo. Even on the slower songs his bursts of notes seemed faster than mere human fingers could manage.

No wonder the American media dubbed him Captain Speedfingers.

But Alvin Lee really was that successful, as a guitarist and as a member of Ten Years After, who were, for a while, one of the biggest live bands in the world thanks to their appearance in the Woodstock movie. Before their appearance at Woodstock, Ten Years After was just another British blues band, with jazz overtones. After the festival, the band, and Alvin Lee in particular, were elevated to superstar status.

Ten Years After are similar to Jethro Tull, if only in the sense that it’s yet another unjustly forgotten great rock group. They have a serious difference, though: they don’t exist as a group any more unless you count the occasional reunions, but that’s something really rare and really peculiar.

So if the Tullers are still able to remind the world of their presence on the Planet, they usually do it by releasing one more mediocre or horrible album sorry Tull fans. To dig Ten Years After, though, one can only rummage through their back catalog. Lots of filler, as far as both jams and songs go, but there’s enough hooks in their material to warrant their existence.

Real fast guitar, dude. Not ALL the songs need to be so long, people.

This is a tidy little ditty much admired in the American south for its twang and giddyup!

Love Like a Man hit 10 on U.
